I AM

My name is Ryan Jacobson. I am an 19-year-old from Los Angeles, California. 

 

Before the pandemic I would take the bus to and from school every day. Our route took us past the large Veterans Administration facilities of Los Angeles, which is adjacent to my school. Often, I was able to get a glimpse into what life might be like living within the VA or on the streets outside of the VA. I was constantly saddened to see so many brave people living in extreme poverty and even homeless. I thought to myself, “What can be done?”

 

I have played golf for many years at the Veterans Heroes Golf Course with an instructor who fought in the Vietnam War. He is not only a great coach but also became a great friend. I listened to his stories of serving our country for years and met many of his inspiring veteran friends. I learned again how difficult a life many of our veterans now live. I thought again about how I could help.

 

Through school, I have volunteered for many projects with veterans on the VA grounds.  I’ve visited with veterans that are happy, but also the less fortunate who struggle to afford even basic needs.

 

Going to school next to the VA, I see veterans each day coming to workout at our school gym. It makes me happy that my school gives back to this community and I began thinking more seriously about how I could give back on an even more personal level. I started Tech for Vets because it is something I am extremely passionate about and believe it can help made a difference.  I want the veterans to be able to connect with others the way I have felt a connection with them.
